The holiday release season is always tricky. School vacations, days off, Christmas, New Years, all of these factors play a role in studios decisions about when to put their films in front of people so that A) people will be around to see them, and B) so they don’t get overshadowed by other films looking for attention from the Academy

According to press releases, two soon-to-be released films, visionary director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s drama Biutiful and controversial, newly R-rated Blue Valentine, are getting the holiday shuffle to make sure that viewers don’t overlook them. First off, Blue Valentine has been bumped from a treacherous New Years Eve release to two days earlier on December 29th. You may say this makes no sense, but believe me, the rate of vacationers willing to go see a movie on a Wednesday night rather than try to see it in between Friday night parties and New Years Day hang overs will be much higher.

As such, Biutiful has been bumped from it’s December 29th release all the way to January 28th, presumably to not be overshadowed by not only the release of Blue Valentine, but also the leftover film goers who didn’t rush to see True Grit, Narnia or Tron.

Now the question is, what are you guys going to be seeing while you’re on break?
