Breaking Dawn Part 2 DVD And Blu-ray Opening Weekend Sales Top Part 1 image
The Twilight Saga has been the cash cow that keeps on giving for Summit/-Lionsgate, and the DVD/Blu-ray release of the final film in the popular vampire saga was no exception. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 made its home video debut last weekend, and sold more than three million units over the course of the weekend, topping the DVD opening weekend for the first part of the adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's final book in the Twilight series.

Rather than a typical Tuesday release for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, Summit set the release of the film for Saturday, March 2 at 12:01 a.m., which allowed stores to make a midnight sale event of the final film's home video release. And an event, it was. The estimated numbers for the film's home video sales last weekend are in the ballpark of 3.85 million units, when combining DVD and Blu-ray units sold. The millions of dollars made from home video sales during the release weekend adds more money to the $829 million the film made at the worldwide box office, which is a franchise best. Overall, The Twilight Saga has grossed more than $3.3 billion at the worldwide box-office.

Blu-ray sales accounted for an estimated 27% of the first weekend sales, which is up 22% from the first weekend sales of the first part of Breaking Dawn last year.

Directed by Bill Condon and arguably the best feature installment in the franchise, Breaking Dawn Part 2 picks up with Bella newly made as a vampire and, along with her vampire husband Edward, soon faced with a confrontation against the Volturi when they learn of the existence of their half-human/half-vampire daughter Renesmee. The film took a necessary risk in changing up the ending and it pays off in delivering on the momentum of the story in a way the final book doesn't. Given the popularity of the franchise and the success of the final film, it's not especially surprising to learn that Breaking Dawn Part 2 has already begun a successful home video release.

If you haven't picked up a copy yet, Amazon has the Blu-ray (with digital copy) priced at $19.96. They're also offering the DVD (also with digital copy) for $14.96.
