On paper, Dog Fight -- currently filming in Louisiana -- has the most impressive comedic cast for a film coming out in 2012. Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis, John Lithgow and Brian Cox are on the campaign trail for the political comedy. Now it’s up to director Jay Roach to mine all of that comedic potential into legitimate laughs.

He’s about to get a little more help. Moviehole reports that Dan Aykroyd has joined the ensemble in a role that’s yet to be determined. As the site points out, that’s three comedians with Saturday Night Live roots contributing to Roach’s production (Ferrell and Sudeikis being the other two), though whether that’s a blessing or a curse is up to you to decide.

The Dog Fight premise sure sounds funny enough. Ferrell and Galifianakis play rival South Carolina politicians who clash over a presidential nomination. So it’s kind of like The Ides of March with anticipated toilet humor. Roach, of course, is best known for his Austin Powers and Meet the Parents franchises, though this is his first time fully collaborating with Ferrell and Galifianakis, both of whom bring unique comedy styles to their pictures. Truthfully, I’m dying to see how they work together, because both usually need a straight man to play off of, and they don’t seem to have it here.

And by involving Aykroyd in Dog Fight, it (temporarily) prevents him from pursuing that pesky third Ghostbusters film that no one really wants. Sounds like a win-win situation. Dog Fight will be in theaters on Aug. 10, 2012. Will you check it out?
