Steven Spielberg has always been pretty adamant about leaving E.T.: The Extraterrestrial as a stand alone movie, but Drew Barrymore may be close to changing his mind. Dark Horizons that Drew is “anxious” to resume the role of Gertie as long as Spielberg oversees the project. That could mean she’d settle for him as executive producer, but Spielberg would be a fool to allow anyone but himself to direct anything involving E.T.. He’s no fool.

Barrymore has reportedly been talking to Spielberg about it, and says he’s actually giving it serious thought. Drew thinks the world needs another “feel good” movie right now, which if you ask me vastly underrates the brilliance of E.T.. You’ve Got Mail is a “feel good” movie, E.T. is a freaking classic.

The story Drew is pitching, would of course bee all about her. She wants E.T. to return to Earth looking for her to help him, forgetting that Gertie was really just a cutsie ancillary character in the film, it’s Elliot that’s E.T.’s friend. But then Henry Thomas isn’t still famous so no one cares about him.

While I think anyone with a lick of sense is probably fairly opposed to an E.T. sequel just on general principle, perhaps we should just be thankful it isn’t a remake Spielberg is mulling. There’s actually a novel out there that explores the world of E.T. post movie called The Green Planet, and in it E.T. constructs a spaceship out of a giant turnip. No really, it’s pretty good. I’m sure they’ll use none of that in a sequel, but having enjoyed the book I’m open to the idea that a second film might actually be good.
