Gangster Squad Gets A New Release Date, Gravity Delayed Until 2013 image
If you're like me, when the first trailer for Gangster Squad arrived online last week you immediately said, "I want to see that movie now." Unfortunately, there stood one major problem: the film didn't have a release date. Back in April Warner Bros. decided to do a bit of schedule shifting and moved Ben Affleck's Argo, a political period thriller, back one month to October 12th. The reason why this was a problem was because Gangster Squad was originally meant to open on that date, and because the studio didn't want two of its own films competing against each other Gangster Squad had to move. Thankfully the Ruben Fleischer-directed gangster movie has once again been blessed with a release date.

According to Box Office Mojo, WB has officially given a new release date to Gangster Squad and the film will now hit theaters on September 7th. It's a funny move if not just because Argo was originally going to be put out on September 14th. The movie stars Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Emma Stone, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Pena and Anthony Mackie and follows a select group of the LAPD that worked to remove the mafia presence from Los Angeles back in the 1940s and 50s. The movie will now compete with the Henry Cavill action film The Cold Light of Day, the indie dramedy Hello I Must Be Going and the James Cromwell-starring A Lonely Place for Dying (though Gangster Squad is currently the only new wide release on that weekend).

But that's not the only shift that Warners has made, as Gravity and Beautiful Creatures have been updated as well. First, the sad news: Gravity has been taken off the release calendar. While the movie was originally going to come out on November 21st, it has now been bumped to an unspecified day in 2013. The movie, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, is a sci-fi thriller starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as astronauts lost in space after an accident. As for Beautiful Creatures, the upcoming YA adaptation has been moved up two days, from February 15th to February 13th. While a Wednesday release is strange for such an early month of the year, one can assume that it was done so that the movie can compete with A Good Day to Die Hard, the fourth Die Hard sequel that is also set to be released that Wednesday. While things will likely change before then, also set to be released that week is the animated Weinstein film Escape From Planet Earth and the action/horror movie I, Frankenstein.
