It's kind of insane: X-Men: Days of Future Past isn't coming out for another four months, but director Bryan Singer and Twentieth Century Fox are nonetheless more than happy to flood the internet with every kind of conceivable update about its creation. The director has been Tweeting about the film even before production began, enticing us early on with ambiguous images, and behind-the-scenes looks.
Then of course Empire unleashed 25 (count 'em, 25!) magazine covers giving us glimpses of a wide array of characters, both old and new, from Quicksilver to Wolverine. We dug in and scoured these images for clues about X-Men: Days of Future Past, and already more Empire images are making their way online! The four posted here were tipped from Reddit. And we'll break 'em down below.
First and foremost, we've got the image up top: Jennifer Lawrence back in her painstakingly detailed costume to play Raven Darkholme A.K.A. Mystique). In Tweets, we've seen her poised. In trailers, we've seen her squirm. But here, she's taking action in a decidedly American way, raising a gun while our flag falls behind her.
The second shot shows Hugh Jackman as Logan (A.K.A. Wolverine) with his bone claws and pecs out in a setting that appears to be '70s-era. Can you make out the figure in the mirror? My guess is young Magneto, played by Michael Fassbender. But as this shot seems to be between takes (note the crew member in the corner) it might just be a handsome looking stand-in.
Next up there's Sir Ian McKellen playing the more modern day incarnation of Magneto. In the shot he is using his powers of metal manipulation to propel himself into the air in some crazy setting, which we've seen teased before. But what does it mean!?
Lastly, the up and coming class of X-Men stands for a somber group shot. From left to right, we've got newcomer to the franchise Adan Canto as Robert da Costa (A.K.A. Sunspot), then returning talent Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde (A.K.A Shadowcat), Shawn Ashmore as Bobby Drake (A.K.A. Iceman) and Daniel Cudmore as Piotr Rasputin (A.K.A. Colossus).
Based on a comic book arc of the same name, X-Men: Days of Future Past centers on a time travel mission that throws Wolverine back to 1973 in hopes of preventing a future where the conflict between humans and mutants has led to all-out war. Aside from Lawrence, Jackman, Fassbender, McKellen, Canto, Page, Ashmore and Cudmore, the sprawling ensemble cast also boasts Evan Peters, Nicholas Hoult, James McAvoy, Peter Dinklage, Halle Berry, Booboo Stewart, Patrick Stewart, Omay Sy and Fan Bingbing. See them all when X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theaters May 23rd.
