We've been excited about the project Cowboys & Aliens based on its title alone-- I mean, duh-- but really started bouncing up and down in our seats when Robert Downey, Jr. signed on to star. There hasn't been much news on the project since Downey Jr. joined over a year ago, but now the only possible thing to make this better has happened-- Jon Favreau is interested in directing.
Variety's Deal Memo is reporting that Favreau is interested in the project, which would presumably film between Iron Man 2 and 3. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci as currently rewriting the script, and we know it'll be Star Trek Kurtzman & Orci, not Transformers 2 Kurtzman & Orci, because they're also teaming up with Lost executive producer and Star Trek collaborator Damon Lindelof.
The prospect of Favreau directing a film written by Kurtzman and Orci and Lindelof, with Robert Downey Jr. in the lead, is almost too much to bear. I still don't really even know what the movie would be about-- it's aliens in the Old West, what more do you need to know?-- but would happily buy my ticket today. We love having Favreau doing Iron Man, but it's even more exciting to think that he's willing to branch out in between them. Please, powers that be, do whatever you can to make this happen.
