Serenity 2 May Happen

By Josh Tyler: 2007-10-04 02:23:20

Serenity 2 May Happen Serenity was a massive flop in theaters, but could big DVD sales for the box office bombed film be enough to resurrect the franchise? Alan Tudyk thinks so and he’s excited about it, even if his character is dead.

According to the guys over at Moviehole, Tudyk told them that a sequel could be happening. Alan says, “They had to put [the new DVD] out because they’ve been selling out of the other one and so Universal’s like ‘So, let’s do another one’. And now… there’s now a chance there’s going to be another movie.” That’s great news if you’re a Browncoat or, like me, a sensible person who simply loves a great science fiction movie.

What’s more, the way Tudyk talks it sounds like the entire cast would be more than willing to come back. That includes Nathan Fillion, the crew’s intrepid Captain Tightpants. Except the question isn’t so much about whether the cast will be back, but where we’ll be watching them.

With the film’s box office numbers as bad as they were, it might make sense for the studio to push a sequel out the door as a direct-to-DVD sequel. If you’re a fan of Serenity you’ll probably be happy to have the crew back in just about any form, I just hope if it comes to that it doesn’t end up a low budget feature that sacrificed quality in the name of saving a buck. Come on, that’s usually what happens with these things. On the other hand, Serenity started out as a TV series called Firefly. If franchise creator Joss Whedon can make it work inside a TV budget, he should have no problem doing it on a direct-to-DVD one.

Meanwhile, those of you starved for more from the Serenity’s crew can catch Alan Tudyk hitting Luke Wilson with a shovel in 3:10 to Yuma. He’s also in the hilarious comedy Death at a Funeral. It’s starting to look like Tudyk, not leading man Nathan Fillion will be Serenity’s breakout star.

    omfg....YES...

  1. Lancelot Says:

the original movie / series put most of the more recent sci-fi shows to shame.. I was not surprised that the show was canceled since studio's have proven time & time again they really don't know what people like.. Thank God for cable as the repeats of the movie & "Firefly" episodes may just save this great series. If not, at least we'll get a second movie. I just hope they spend the money & do it right, no second rate special effects..

Note: the security code requirement is about as stupid as this show having been canceled.!!!

I can't wait. This will be awesome if they really do it. Hopefully it has the necessary budget. Even if it goes straight to dvd, they may have special showings of it in the theater like the did for the first one.

  1. Gemma K Says:

Based on what's been done with B5's Lost Tales, i think the quality of "straight-to-dvd" can be cautiously hoped for.

  1. SciFiFan Says:

Greatest sci-fi series ever! More of it in any form would be terrific!

  1. Great White Snark Says:

Fan-frigging-tastic. Slim-to-no chances have now become remotely less-than-slim! Happy day.

Jesus-shitting-Christ! No way this will happen, but lord I wish it was true...I need more Captain Mal in my life.

  1. Fireflier Says:

  1. Hugh Jass Says:

I just want to find out about the guys with the blue hands.

  1. Jess Says:

They really need to stop basing decisions on how well a film does in movie theaters. I hate movie theaters these days. There's always at least one jerk talking on the cell phone, and several more sending text messages so I get flashes of their back-lit screen. Then there's the old fashioned kicking the back of your chair and letting the kids climb all over the place.

DVDs come out just a few months after the theatrical release. I get to pause it when I want, re-watch it when I want and it only costs 2 movie tickets. With home theater systems as good as they are, going to the theater is a waste of time, money and patience.

I'd love to see a new Firefly movie (or even a revival of the TV series) but like several other posters, I hope they don't skimp on the budget.

oh my, oh my! I hope it airs again! Firefly was truly a great tv-show

  1. Dimo Ar\'Kacho Says:

    Shiny!!!

*dances around like a piece of wrapping paper*

  1. Jem Says:

If the script/directing/cast performances are of the same quality as they were in Firefly/Serenity, it'll work on any format...........and better than a lot of the other rubbish out on the big and small screen at the moment. Something I'd happily invest my hard-earned cash on!!!

  1. Beth Says:

omg! omg! oh I hope this is true. Please please give us another serenity installment.

  1. queenbarwench Says:

Lovely thought, but I won't believe it until it actually happens. Not sure what story they'd tell, though. The point of the first film was to wrap up when the series was cancelled. River's 5-year arc was squashed into 120 minutes, so what's left to say?

  1. captainmalwannabe Says:

even my own mother (albeit a starwars junkie of old) calls me and clambours for any information HINTING at a continuation of any kind. I havent even told her about reading the fanfic online. She'd never get off the computer. If retirees can love the firefly universe, who wouldnt?.... although i do have a sneeking suspicion this is her david-bowie-in-tight-pants fetish cropping up.

For wealthy singles, millionaires, and celebrities. Meetrich dot com is the premier private club to go for fun. Chairle sheen seemed to be found in it and find some dates with hot girls. I found it from an article from msn. Just share. We may happen to meet a celebrity there. That'll be amazing. maybe it is a daydream?

  1. Jo Says:

Well Lets hope it happens, who knows if we talk about it enough on the interweb that may be enough to make em take then ext step.

  1. Ian Jeffries Says:

A direct to DVD movie would be wonderful. I watched Firefly for the first time this week, and finished it in two days. I wish I had known about it when Serenity came out, so I could have helped.

  1. AndrewRichards Says:

I loved Serenity and after hearing about the series...I thought it was even better. Im not a big Sci-Fi fan, but this is one of my movies and series of all time. Hope to see a sequel and second series.

  1. Frank Hensley Says:

The FireFly series to Serenity movie was excellent. I saw the movie twice before it was a DVD. I watched it twice on HBO and it never gets old. An outstanding TV/Movie that the whole family can understand and enjoy. Getting a sequel would be most welcomed. Starting up the FireFly series again would get the interest going for a movie sequel. Either way, we win with family SciFi entertainment. I don't know how they got their TV ratings, but I didn't know anyone who missed FireFly on Friday nights. The networks need to rethink their ratings and how many people really watch and not go with the estimates from the rating companies, who were Alliance cronies by the way they killed FireFly. Anything that Joss brings to the screen will be worth watching!
