A few months ago M. Night Shyamalan spoke out against the so far failed, simultaneous DVD and theatrical release strategy that Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban’s production company is pushing… and was left hanging by the other powers in Hollywood. Everyone else has so far remained silent. But now finally another voice is speaking out against it, and it’s the biggest: Steven Spielberg.

Film Stalker has picked up an interview with Spielberg in Time in which he discusses the future of cinema and his nostalgic addiction to shooting movies on film instead of in digital. Oddly enough, even though his own company has invested heavily in it, Spielberg isn’t going to use digital himself.

But the real gem in his comments is what he thinks of the DVD day of release controversy. “I have to go on record saying that I am not in favor of a DVD coming out the same day as the film opens,” Steven says. “I really believe that the average home system is far inferior to a movie house. And a lot of it is the social magic of going out to the movies, seeing it with a lot of people you have never met and sharing an experience. I feel there is no substitute for going out to the movies. There is nothing like it.”

Of course Mark Cuban and his partners would say that DVD day of release won’t hurt cinema, only push it to improve. Unfortunately, so far the best ideas theater owners and Hollywood have come up with to “improve” involve higher ticket prices and more movies by Tyler Perry.

It’s not going well. Not well at all.
