Spielberg May Direct Jurassic Park IV Himself!

By Josh Tyler: 2006-09-14 00:00:00

Spielberg May Direct Jurassic Park IV Himself! We've been hearing about Jurassic Park IV for awhile, but with all the Indiana Jones talk it seemed like it was being put on the back burner by Spielberg. That may no longer be the case.

Sky News is reporting that Spielberg is eager to get it moving and may actually consent to direct the fourth installment himself. Steven directed the first two Jurassic Park movies, but Joe Johnston took over for the less successful third one. Apparently Johnston is still Spielberg's first choice to direct number four, but if Johnston can't or won't do it, then Spielberg will hop back into the dino-director's chair.

Jurassic Park is currently slated for a wide release some time in 2008, so if they're going to hit that target Spielberg will have to make up his mind soon. The fact that he's interested in doing it indicates that whatever script they're using, the may actually have something good this time. Is there more territory left to be explored in the Jurassic Park? Spielberg seems to think so.

    Hmmmm. #2 & 3 blew so let's make a #4? The hell with that.

  1. Darkcloud Says:

Since he screwed up the 2nd one and Johnston was asleep at the wheel on the 3rd... I certainly hope if the 4th is made someone else handles it

  1. p_d_ise Says:

hope you make it a good one

  1. Marshall Hijar Says:

Please don't use the old Deinonychus skull for them, I mean there are three skulls that I know of, first is the skull reconstruced by John Ostrom, which I thought that Robert Bakker whilst meeting him at a rock and mineral show at the Merchandise Mart in Denver Colorado I believe on April 20th a few years back, and he told me that the Ostrom reconstruction is wrong (Which he said looked more like an Allosaur), and the ones he drew are correct (Which look to me more like the skull of a Stenonychosaurus exept the valuable details of course).
The second skull had been done by Gregory S. Paul in his vanished book Predatory Dinosaurs of the World, in which he mistakenly called them Velociraptor antirrhophus (antirrhophus, the species name of Deinonychus, Velociraptor because he then believed that the nasal area could have been turned upward like the Velociraptor mongoliensis).
The third skull drawing by Paul shows the nasal area longer and not pointing upward. It is worth mentioning that ALL of the Jurassic Park velociraptors' skulls are more like the second skull rendition, and not even the Jurassic Park 3 raptors are even correct as they claim (Depending on which Velociraptor you choose to think of it as being based on.).
This is all well and good exept that I have seen reconstructions of Deinonychus skulls that look like neither Ostrom or Paul, but more like Paul.
But these were not drawings, they were printed sculptures that I also saw at that very same Merchendise Mart either that same year or the next...
The point is that Yes, Robert Bakker's drawing of Deinonychus's skull seems to coincide with Paul's latest drawing, what he himself told me, as well as the printed skulptures, and NOT John Ostrom's reconstruction.
This having been said, as I look at the top of this web site it seems as if the possible "poster" window I am looking at with my very own eyes is showing the Jurassic Park logo with the skeleton of the Ostrom rendition, and I am only slightly disturbed. But that might be because I'm a nerd.
This may matter only to me but I don't like it when the facts are fudged at all, and if I am wrong in my own assumptions, I want it proven to me. Don't you?

  1. Jacky Paper Says:

Yeah, but Maarshal... Which skull is the correct one?

  1. Palingu Says:

1 was da best and my favourite. 2 was alright but screwed up a bit. 3 arghhh

  1. William Birch Says:

Of course the first was great, most first installments are. The second was pretty good also, but a little disappionting. I happen to be among the minority in admitting that I LOVED the third! Sure it had hardly any plot, but substance it not what I'm looking for in an action about Dinosaurs roaming the earth today. The third is actually my favorite. I say, "Go for the fourth, but make sure you make the Dinos go extinct. No fifth please.

  1. Savage Says:

I think jpIV should be left to Spielberg to make the plot. Remember, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back wasn't Lucas' bset work with the series, but he brought it around in Return of the Jedi. Just have some hope in Steven. Also, he is the guy responsible for the Jaws series, ET, and Indiana Jones.
Also, I think we have doomed ourselves with movies. back when the internet wasn't used as much. Back then, Steven did Jurassic Park, in solitude and not much media coverage. When we made it a hit, The Lost World was made so they would make it appeal to as many people for more sales. JPIII was the same as the first, but with too much media coverage as the second.
For the next one, let Speilberg work his magic, with no media and no budget problems, and he could give us another masterpiece. Lets just hope it truely is the last, or it will become lamer than the Jason movies.

    Peaces and chicken grease, YO!

  1. Blackteeth Says:

When I first heard that a fourth film was in the works I was skeptical. I hadn't enjoyed the third all that much, and I didn't like the fact that style had won out over substance. For the next several months I went around decrying the idea of a fourth Jurassic Park until a good friend of mine made a strong point. He said, "Zac, as long as Dinosaurs are in the films, I'm going to go see them and support them". This changed my perspective.

Sure the sequels might not hold up to the original, but my friend is right. We should all be grateful that someone like Spielberg is actually bringing these animals to the big screen. No one else with the resources really wants too! My philosophy now is that if the film is about dinosaurs, features dinosaurs, and is created by a group of individuals passionate about dinosaurs (such as Spielberg, Horner, and Winston) I'm going to go see it and be grateful that I have the chance to see how my fellow man sees these prehistoric beasts through the filter of his own imagination.

As corny as that sounds, I don't care. Just put dinosaurs in films. They're an amazing creative outlet and a marvel of nature.

  1. Drew Says:

Word is the fourth one's about some company that took over iNGen and is breeding and training gun-weilding dinosaurs for the government to combat terrorists. I dunno about you guys, but if they're letting a sorry-ass excuse for a plot like that go, then i won't be seeing it.

  1. Pat Says:

The firts one was phenominal. The second one was no were near as good as the first one, but it was ok. The third was awful but it kept me entertained. In the fourth i would like to see alot of the main characters from one and two back because no one character appears in all three. Allan Grant and Ian Malcom would be great to see together on the big screen again. The dinosaurs with guns is a stupid idea, and i dont want to see a repeat of what happened in san diago in the second one because outside of the t-rex destroying the bus that part wasn't that good. I'm hoping Spielburg can pull a rabit out of his and and get this serries back on track.
