Total Recall Featurette Shows Off Real-Life Hover Cars

Though you can debate whether or not we really need a remake of 1990's Total Recall, the one huge advantage the new movie has over the Arnold Schwarzenegger original is the advance of movie technology. And while director Len Wiseman could use CGI effects to make the movie's futuristic world richer and bigger, he relied on good old-fashioned practical effects as well--especially for a car chase sequence that takes place in super futuristic hover cars.

If you think there's no way to have Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale actually driving hover cars, well, you're kind of right-- but you would be surprised how much of it they were doing for real, as you can see in the behind-the-scenes featurette below. Take a look:

It's wild to see the combination of CGI streets and very old fashioned car chase technology, though with the added benefit of some video game-style joysticks that make it possible. And Biel and Beckinsale seem to be enjoying it as well, since being able to actually drive the cars has to be more fun than being stuck in front of a green screen the whole time. Total Recall opens this weekend, and while the jury is still out on how the movie itself holds up to Paul Verhoeven's original, at least we know the visual effects are going to be top of the line.
