Stupid humor at the expense of stupid people floated to the top again this week with Bruno taking in $30 million to be number one. While that's about $4 million more than Sacha Baron Cohen's last overcooked Saturday Night Live sketch turned full-length feature film Borat, it's still a step backwards for the actor's financial popularity.
Borat managed to earn its opening $26 million total in little more than 800 theaters for a hefty $31,000 average. Bruno, by contrast, debuted on over 2700 screens for less than $11,000 each theater. A little but of Cohen goes a long way, but the wacky actor begins to wane when spread so thin.
Meanwhile poor Chris Columbus, whose only gig since being booted off the Harry Potter series was the poorly timed cinematic pseudo-revival of Rent, debuted his newest attempt at entertainment: I Love You Beth Cooper. It opened in a miserable seventh place spot with only $5 million. With a minimalist $18 million budget the film may just break even, a welcome relief for Columbus given that Rent ended up $10 million in the hole.
