Back in 1983, Spy Hunter was a sophisticated arcade game that basically consisted of a James Bond-style car gunning down rival automobiles as the road weaves, curves and splits. The game has gone through multiple renovations over the years, but today it would probably bore a gamer to tears. So itís going to be a challenge for Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer to freshen in up now that heís attached to a movie version over at Warner Bros.

Vulture is reporting that Fleischer has ďsigned onĒ to not only direct a Spy Hunter movie but also executive produce a big-screen version of the í83 game. Heís the latest name to attach himself to the project, which almost landed in both John Woo and Paul W.S. Andersonís wheelhouse. Fleischer reportedly will recruit new screenwriters to punch up the treatment that has been stuck in limbo at WB for years. Thatís the good news.

Weíre anxious for Fleischer to return to the promise of Zombieland. His manic buddy-pizza-guy comedy 30 Minutes or Less worked itself into a lather but forgot to be funny. And we had high hopes for Fleischerís Gangster Squad Ö until the shooting tragedy in a Colorado movie theater forced Warner to slice Squad off at the knees by changing a pivotal scene that took place in a theater (and prompted an unfortunate delay in the movieís release schedule).

Itís very possible Gangster Squad will still work when it comes to theaters in January. The cast is solid, from Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin to Emma Stone and Sean Penn. Maybe Gosling or Brolin can follow Fleischer over to Spy Hunter? Thatís be better than Spy Hunter starring Jesse Eisenberg or Aziz Ansari.
