The First Trailer For Professor Marston And The Wonder Women Is Intriguing And Powerful

You know her name. You know her story. Now, it looks like you will soon know the story of her real life creation. Wonder Woman has dominated the summer box office with its gripping tale of action and empowerment, but the story of the people behind Diana Prince is arguably just as fascinating. On that note, a new trailer for Professor Marston & the Wonder Women has just debuted online, and it looks like an enthralling tale of an eccentric relationship. Check out the trailer below to see for yourself.

Professor Marston & the Wonder Women follows the real life exploits of psychologist Dr. William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans) and his creation of the now iconic superheroine during the 1940s. As Marston comes up against opposition from censors for his depiction of sexuality in his work, he and his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall) begin a love affair with a young woman named Olivia Byrne (Bella Heathcote). However, the trio of lovers soon finds themselves subject scorn of the outside world as others look at their relationship and cast judgment.

An interesting thing to note about Professor Marston & the Wonder Women is the way in which it frames its central romance. Unlike many films of a similar ilk, Professor Marston does not seem to frame the polyamorous love between the Marstons and Olivia Byrne as a torrid love affair or an unhealthy love triangle with a potentially tragic ending. Instead, the film appears to take a far more evenhanded approach that sees the beauty in their unconventional love. It is not a traditional romance, but it is not trying to be.

One fascinating aspect of Professor Marston & the Wonder Women's upcoming release is the possibility that the immense financial success of Patty Jenkins' recent DC solo film may help it at the box office. Before the release of Wonder Woman, Diana Prince was not the most popular mainstream superhero of the modern age. Sure, she maintains a rabid DC Comics fanbase, and Gal Gadot's performance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice generated quite a bit of interest, but the third pillar of DC's Trinity did not truly break out until her solo film debuted in June. Now, with Diana Prince leading one of the most successful comic book movies of all time, the story behind the character could easily become far more appealing to mainstream audiences than ever before. Timing is everything in entertainment, isn't it?

Professor Marston & the Wonder Women will debut in theaters later this year on October 27, 2017.
