Will Jared Leto Appear In Suicide Squad 2? Here's What He Says

Joker Jared Leto

With Justice League just over the horizon, it seems like the DCEU is finally coming together. The cinematic universe of DC characters has a number of announced films in the works, one of which is a sequel to the critically panned but still successful Suicide Squad. Gavin O'Connor is taking over directing duties, but we don't know very much else about the project. One of the biggest question marks is whether or not Jared Leto's Joker will be included in the sequel. While there are a few different Joker projects, Jared Leto admits that he doesn't really know if he's in Suicide Squad 2 or not.

A lot of moving parts, we'll see what happens. I think Gavin is incredibly talented, he seems to be the perfect director for Suicide Squad 2. I think he's a really gifted filmmaker and I really love his work.

Jared Leto, who recently appeared in Blade Runner 2049, chatted with Collider about his role in the movie when the subject of the Joker inevitably came up. When asked about whether or not he knew if he was appearing in Suicide Squad 2, Leto essentially said that there's a lot going on right now, and he isn't entirely sure. He does, however, think that Gavin O'Connor is a good director and a perfect choice for the supervillain sequel.

So, no confirmation on Joker for the sequel, but it's also unclear exactly who is coming back for Suicide Squad 2. The only three characters who seem like a sure thing are Will Smith's Deadshot, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, and Viola Davis' Amanda Waller; everyone else is kind of free game. As for the Joker's chances, they seem decent. He was previously rumored to be in the sequel, and the marketing for the original film put such a heavy emphasis on him (even though the actual left much of it on the cutting room floor). On the other hand, Leto's Joker was controversial among viewers, with unique mannerisms and a bevy of tattoos. Plus, Leto was rumored to have been mad about the news that other people will be playing the Joker, so maybe he isn't thrilled to come back.

While Suicide Squad 2 is up in the air, Warner Bros. does have a few other Joker projects in the works. A Joker-Harley romance movie is in development with the directors of Crazy, Stupid, Love set to helm. There's also the outside-of-the-box Joker film that is expected to stand outside of DCEU continuity. This film will be a Joker origin story developed by Martin Scorsese with Leonardo Di Caprio being pursued to star. You're not exactly going to be Joker-starved over the next few years.

Suicide Squad 2 is currently scheduled to premiere some time in 2019. To learn everything you can about the sequel, here's what we know so far.
