Tom Cruise Reaches Settlement With Tabloids Over Stories Written After His Separation
By Mack Rawden 2 years ago
Remember when Tom Cruise flipped out about Life & Style and In Touch magazines writing some sketchy things immediately after he split from Katie Holmes? Well, a lot of celebrities make bold claims about filing lawsuits and then nothing ever comes of it, but apparently, the Mission Impossible star doesnít screw around when it comes to litigation threats. He followed through on the promise to sue the parent company of the two magazines, Bauer Publishing, for fifty million dollars, and rather than face a potential catastrophic loss on court, the publisher decided to make peace.
According to TMZ, neither side has commented on the terms of the settlement and neither side will in the future because itís been permanently sealed. As part of the agreement, however, Bauer Publishing did issue a statement further clarifying Cruise did not abandon his daughter Suri.
"Bauer Publishing, 'In Touch' and 'Life and Style' never intended to communicate that Tom Cruise had cut off all ties and abandoned his daughter Suri and regret if anyone drew that inference from anything they published."
The line between speculation thatís constitutionally protected and straight up lies can be extremely thin, especially when it comes to tabloids and headlines. More often than not, celebrities decide itís not worth going to court in order to find out what a judge will say, especially given the high price of legal fees, but for someone who is as affluent as Cruise, itís less about money and more about sending a message to all tabloids not to go there again.
Cruise has had more than his share of negative publicity over the years, mostly due to his links with Scientology, but by all accounts, heís a very dedicated and invested father. Anyone who says otherwise will clearly be taken to court moving forward. Ideally, however, this message will be more than enough to ward off others in the future.
