Holy [BLEEP] The New Penny Dreadful Trailer Is Unsettling image
Well if the previously released teasers for Showtime’s upcoming genre drama, Penny Dreadful weren't enough to spook you, allow us to introduce you to another — one that’s sure to make you mutter and yelp things you'd be less than inclined to expose your grandparents to, if they're the type that are faint of heart. Because, hooo lawdy, does this show pump that creep factor up to eleven, my friends. To have a Jessie Spano moment for a second: we're so excited, we're so scared!

Californication Season 7 Premiere Date Set, Also Nurse Jackie And Penny Dreadful image
Just the other day, when we were sharing the newly released trailer for the seventh and final season of Californication, we were pondering whether or not Showtime still planned on getting the comedy back on the air in April as expected.

Penny Dreadful And Wayward Pines Unveil First Images Of People Standing Around image
As a horror fan, I consider myself spoiled by the wealth of television series that are giving the genre its due attention. Two of the most intriguing upcoming projects are Showtime’s literary mash-up Penny Dreadful and Fox’s small town thrillerWayward Pines, created by M. Night Shyamalan and Chad Hodge. Intriguing doesn’t necessarily mean good, mind you, but there’s certainly less clear expectations going into these series than those that came attached to Hannibal and Dracula.

Showtime's Penny Dreadful Will Possess You With This New Teaser image
From what we know about Penny Dreadful, which admittedly isn’t much, literary beasts such as Dracula and Dorian Gray are running amok in London at the end of the 19th century. But there hasn’t been any sign that either religion or any satanic forces would come into play. Yet in the teaser above, we see Eva Green’s character Vanessa Ives praying in front of a crucifix on the wall – plus candles, since you can’t pray without candles – until she is apparently taken over by a most unholy spirit, as depicted by entirely white eyeballs and the on-the-nose quote “We all have our demons.”

Showtime's Penny Dreadful Debuts Monstrous First Teaser image
It’s being heavily promoted as a psychosexual horror series, and while I don’t necessarily understand what could possibly be sexual about Frankenstein’s creature, but Count Dracula is probably a swinging young chap, and Dorian Grey’s life is filled with lustful decadence. I wasn’t even aware the Wolfman was a part of this flick.

Timothy Dalton Joins Penny Dreadful At Showtime image
License to Kill actor Timothy Dalton hasn’t had a big TV gig since he popped up on Chuck several seasons ago. Whether by choice or circumstance, he hasn’t worked nearly as frequently, but that’s all about to change. He just found a new project in Showtime’s new series, Penny Dreadful, which is headed to the subscription cable network sometime in 2014.

Eva Green And Josh Hartnett Are The First To Join Showtime's Horror Series Penny Dreadful image
We’ll get Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray, Mary Shelley’s Victor Frankenstein and his creature, as well as characters from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Had this horror mishmash been a theatrical release that Hartnett and Green joined, I don’t think I’d be quite as intrigued, but Showtime has a way of taking things to the extreme that I like.
