The Flash And Arrow Spinoff Will Feature A Big DC Villain That Hasn't Been Used

We’ve known for a couple of weeks now that the CW is putting together a third DC Comics-based project that will feature some characters who have appeared on both Arrow and The Flash. In addition to those big names, the spinoff team has plans to introduce even more big characters who have not appeared on television before. Greg Berlanti recently spoke out that a noticeable villain will be among the new additions, along with a female superhero. But first, let’s talk about that villain:

[We’re] making sure that the villain that we have on that show is distinct… another big character who hasn’t been used yet.

Casting is currently underway for the Arrow and Flash spinoff. We already know that Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz, Wentworth Miller, Victor Garber and Dominic Purcell are all going to play a part in the spinoff, and we’ve even see casting descriptions for some of the characters, including a “Mystery Hero” and a “Traveler” (who sounds like a Rip Hunter or Booster Gold) and who plays his cards close to his chest. Unfortunately, we've heard even less about any new villains who might appear in the project. Berlanti and co. are also currently playing their cards close to their chests in terms of letting us know what villain will be cast, but needless to say, it sounds like we’ll be hearing about a big villain sooner rather than later.

In addition, Berlanti tells Variety the team is taking a note from the Supergirl playbook and wants to introduce a big female hero on the show.

I think it’s really important that we have another female hero on the show, and this one is really exciting. I can’t wait for people to find out — we just have to cast it right, as always. And then you want that Rat Pack-y kind of vibe of all this crew hanging out, as disparate and as different as they are.

Interestingly, while we know that Routh will be returning as Atom, Miller will play Captain Cold, Garber will play Dr. Martin Stein and Purcell will be reprising his role as Heat Wave, we have no idea who Caity Lotz is signed on as. On Arrow, Lotz played Sara Lance, but was killed off of the series at the start of Season 3. Since the spinoff will obviously be occupying the same world as Arrow and The Flash if it moves forward, it will be interesting to see if Sara Lance will somehow return from the dead or if Lotz will be playing a different character altogether. If it’s a new character, she could be the new hero the show is talking about; alternatively “another female hero” sounds to me like there will be a couple of female heroes on the spinoff who will have to work together.

Obviously, there are a lot of details left to be worked out. For instance, the CW has not yet even picked up the spinoff to series, nor does the new drama have a name. Clearly, the CW would be a good fit for this type of show, and we’ll just have to wait and see whether audiences will get a third DC program on the network next TV season.
