The Screen Actors Guild Award nominations were announced this morning. Things are looking pretty similar to last year’s nominations. While network TV still seems to reign supreme among acting talent in today’s TV comedies, at least, according to SAG, anyway, the actors among some of today’s best cable series nearly dominated the drama categories, with a few notable exceptions.
As the SAG awards focus on actors, the closest thing the categories come to best drama and best comedy are the categories for best ensemble. The casts HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones made that list, as did AMC’s Breaking Bad, Showtime’s Dexter and the lone network series in the category, The Good Wife.. Mad Men’s absence on television this year seems to have left room for another show to make the cut. Among the comedies, Community was unfortunately left off the lists. For NBC, 30 Rock and The Office made the cut. Fox’s Glee also scored a nomination. As strong as their casts are, their nominations feel a bit outdated. In fact, with the exception of The Big Bang Theory taking over for last year’s nom for Hot in Cleveland, the noms are the same as last year. No love for Community, Happy Endings, Parks & Rec or Raising Hope? Things are looking familiar in the individual actor categories. Buscemi, Cranston and Hall were all nominated again, with Patrick J. Adams from Suits also receiving a nomination, as well as Kyle Chandler for Friday Night Lights (final season). Baldwin, Burrell and Carell all appeared on last year’s list of noms for comedy actors and there they are again, along with Jon Cryer and Eric Stonestreet. For the women, Falco, Fey, Vergera and White were all on last year’s list. The only change to this year’s nominations for female actor in a comedy is Julie Bowen. Among the dramas, Close, Margulies and Sedgwick are the returning nominations, with Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates making the list. No love for Clare Danes in Homeland? Laura Linney from The Big C?
