If I had my way during this season of The Sing-Off, Street Corner Renaissance would have been among the finalists of this seasonís a cappella competition. Alas, that wasnít to be as they were eliminated earlier in the competition, but the final three groups were a solid ensemble of excellent vocalists, so itís hard to complain about how things went down. Watch the video of the winning moment below to see which group took home the grand prize.
The Sing-Off is back! It only took a few notes from the start of the opening number ó a Fun. medley performed by all of the competing a cappella groups ó to remind me why I love this series. Thereís nothing quite like the sound of great voices coming together for a good song. Unaccompanied by any other instruments, a cappella really has a way of making an overplayed song sound brand new.
One of things I love about a cappella music is the way it can make an overplayed pop song seem brand new again. The new preview for the new season of The Sing-Off is a prime example of that, as it shows competing group Street Corner Renaissance singing One Directionís ďWhat Makes You Beautiful.Ē To hear these guys sing the pop song, itís as if itís been around for decades. The a cappella spin on One Directionís hit demonstrates the timelessness of the tune.
In addition to releasing a new promo, NBC has announced the competing groups for the upcoming fourth season of The Sing-Off. I admitted recently that Iíve begun to get more than a bit tired of singing competitions, but I make an exception for The Sing-Off, which is a much shorter format, airs during the holiday season and stands out from the rest not so much in the structure of its competition, but in its focus on a cappella music.
There's bad news and good news, which do you want first? We'll start with the good news: Community has a return date! The comedy will return for Season 5 on January 2. Better news is that's a Thursday, in other words, not a Friday or any other non-Thursday day. Of course, for Community to have a spot on Thursday's line-up, one comedy would have to step aside, and it looks like it's Welcome to the Family that's getting the axe.
We learned back in March that NBC was bringing The Sing-Off back, and a little bit later, that Sara Bareilles would not be returning to judge. This week, NBC has announced that another familiar face (and voice) would be joining the judges panel of the a cappella competition. Coming off the release of her Greatest Hits album, singer/songwriter Jewel is set to join fellow musicians Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman on the returning competition series, which will be hosted by Nick Lachey.
NBCís The Sing-Off seemed like an unlikely candidate to get a renewal when it didnít return to the networkís schedule this fall. Last month, however, NBC announced The Sing-Off would be getting a fourth season, which is great news for fans. Itís looking like the judges panel will look a little different upon the showís return. Sara Bareilles has officially bowed out of The Sing-Off.
NBC's The Sing-Off may have debut a few years ahead of its time. The a cappella singing competition series debuted during the holiday season in 2009 and aired for three seasons, before being cancelled. With the recent success of the comedy Pitch Perfect generating new interest and appreciation in all-voices, no instruments music, not to mention NBC's success with The Voice, perhaps it's time for the series to make a comeback. Word is, it's happening!
What sets The Sing-Off apart from other singing competitions? The a cappella music, of course. NBC is teasing us for the third season with these fantastic videos, featuring the contestants as they perform a cappella versions of the theme songs for The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, The Golden Girls and two TV shows.
Iím not an expert on a cappella music. In fact, if I were being completely honest, Iíd say that until recently, I wasnít even all that much of an a capella enthusiast, however thanks to the musical style popping up on TV more and more, Iím developing a real appreciation for it...
Is anyone else as excited as I am to see The Sing-Off return to NBC next month? We have a video from the premiere thatíll give you a taste of each competing groupsí talent as well as some details about their backgrounds.
