Last night’s episode of American Horror Story: Coven certainly took some dark and twisted turns. And it’s at this point that you want to stop reading if you haven’t seen ”The Replacements” as we’re about to get into spoilers from Episode 3! Honestly, three episodes in and there’s already been incest and minotaur sex. Where is there to go from here?
At least, we’re assuming there’s minotaur sex? It’s hard to say exactly what happened between Queenie and her bullish new friend, but the above preview for next week’s “Fearful Pranks Ensue” shows Queenie in bed while Fiona yells at Coredelia for undermining her. So we might assume Queenie survived the ordeal, though who knows what state she’s in.
Sexual assault seemed to be a recurring theme last night, as we learned that Kyle’s loving mother was the wrong kind of loving. And as our own Nick Venable put it in his recap, she ended up having her head trophy-whipped into a pulpy crater. Because hell hath no fury like a frankenzombie scorned, right? As troublesome as Kyle may end up being, I’m predicting it’ll be the lonely and potentially unstable Misty Day that causes the real problems for Zoe.
Meanwhile, there’s the matter of Madison, who was last seen bleeding out on the carpet after having her throat slashed by Fiona. The moment I saw Fiona pour out her drink I knew it wouldn’t end well for Madison. Does this mean Fiona gets her supremeness back? Or will another supreme rise up to take Madison’s place? Zoe seems like a good candidate, but who wouldn’t love to see Nan take Fiona down?
So, is Madison really dead? EW got confirmation from series creator Ryan Murphy, but there’s more…
“Well, I mean, yes, she is dead,” says Murphy. “The funny thing about a horror show to me is that anybody can die at any time. I love that.” But he adds, “All I wanna say is wait ’til you see what happens to the body. Sh-t goes down. When you see episode 4 and you see what Spalding [Denis O'Hare's mute butler] did to the body, you’ll be like ‘Oh, okay I get it. Not only do I get it, but I’m very disturbed.’”
If “disturbed” is the reaction Murphy’s been going for, so far he’s pulling it off with Coven and then some.
In other news, it looks like Frances Conroy is returning with her frizzy red hair. Love it. And it seems like there may be some witchy repercussions for a witch killing another witch, but something tells me Fiona will figure out a way to slip past that. Who will be blamed in her place?
American Horror Story: Coven airs Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m. ET on FX.
