While everybody was anxiously awaiting the second season premiere of HBO's Game of Thrones another one of the premium network's series got a brand new teaser trailer. And no, not the way too Social Network-y debut trailer for The Newsroom (the incredibly promising new series from Aaron Sorkin) but the first glimpse at the highly anticipated third season of Boardwalk Empire. Nucky Thompson is not coming back until the fall, but here's a small taste of what's to come. "So. New year, new rules..."

A lot changed on the Boardwalk during the devastating Season 2 finale, and even though the tease doesn't shy away from that fact (the whole, 'new year' speech), it isn't exactly full of third season spoilers either. It isn't full of spoilers of any kind for that matter, it's really more of an exercise in style over substance and to its credit, I think it's rather powerful. Buscemi is always fun to watch, even if it's just a 30 second promo, and he somehow manages to look pretty badass lighting that cigarette. The extremely shallow focus combined with the black and white photography also works to give the spot the feel of the period as well as some visual power to complement Buscemi's tough talk.

The tease does a good job go highlighting Buscemi's Nucky but we also get to see some other favorites like Stephen Graham's Capone, Michael Stulhbarg's Rothstein, Vincent Piazza's Luciano and, of course, Michael K Williams' Chalky White. There will also be some big changes and new faces for the prohibition set gangster series from Terrence Winter and Martin Scorsese come Season 3. Obviously, without getting into spoiler territory (although I don't know what you'd watch a tease for the third without having seen Seasons 1 and 2), we have lost a few key characters from the Atlantic City scene due to, well, violent death but don't worry too much because, on top of those aforementioned familiar faces giving Nucky trouble, Bobby Cannavale also joined the show to cause trouble and perhaps take a shot at the man controlling the empire.

Boardwalk Empire will return for Season 3 on HBO this fall. It stars Steve Buscemi, Kelly McDonald, Michael Shannon, Shea Whigham, Vincent Piazza and Michael Stuhlbarg. It was created by Terence Winter.
