Co-Producers Say No Truth To Reports Maggie Smith Is Quitting Downton Abbey
Rumors have been abounding for the last couple of months that veteran actress Maggie Smith would probably be leaving BBC's Downton Abbey after the popular series’ third season wraps up. On Sunday, the Internet was ripe with a more specific rumor: that Season 3 would certainly be the 77-year-old actress’ last on the Julian Fellowes-produced drama.
According to yesterday’s reports, Smith wants out and the show is helpless to stop her. However, the LA Times recently spoke with a representative of Carnival Film and Television Limited, who co-produces the show, and discovered there is apparently “no truth” to those earlier reports.
"Series 3 is currently filming with Maggie along with the other cast. We do not comment on future story lines, however there is no truth in the story that Maggie is leaving the show."
Before you get all hot and bothered about the possibility of the grand dame’s return, Season 3 reportedly has some big surprise doozies set up for Downton’s upcoming episodes. One of these doozies will be a birth, but one of these doozies will actually be a death. Downton Abbey is no stranger to killing off its characters, but thus far all of the program’s major characters have managed to escape the reaper. Will Season 3 be the year this changes?
Thankfully, no one is coming forward with spoilers, so it is probably useless to speculate exactly who the hit program will kill off. Nonetheless, I will go ahead and state what we are all thinking anyway: it is entirely possible the Dowager Countess could be the one to bite the dust and would therefore be written off the show, rather than having to leave it. I’m hoping that’s not how Downton Abbey chooses to pan out, but if I’m keeping my fingers crossed for, say, Bates, or the elderly Countess, I’m voting the Countess down every time.
