First Jessica Jones Footage Feels Like A Throwback To The 1970s

While many networks like to start up the advertising campaign for their series far in advance, Netflix has no problem waiting until the last minute, knowing that its subscribers can just watch all their new series whenever the time is right. Speaking of last minutes and time, the streaming giant just dropped the first legitimate teaser trailer for the highly anticipated Marvel series Jessica Jones, and it’s seemingly a throwback to an earlier era that you don’t want to snooze on. No more puns. Check it out!

So what do we see on the ground? Newspaper classifieds, something that a lot of people probably still use, but nowhere near as much as they did before the Internet came around. Looks like some chewing gum in a foil packet, which is also not necessarily old school, but gum has come a long way over the past decade. Then we have photographs - of what looks like the poster-ish image of her standing between buildings - which is yet another slightly out of date prop, since a lot of people's pictures now exist in digital form. Nothing wrong with drinking whiskey, though, because that shit is eternal.

The most dated part of this whole thing, though, is that clock radio, and the fact that Minnie Riperton's "Lovin' You" is the song that's playing. There's nothing wrong with having a non-digital clock tuned into an oldies station, especially if one just enjoys the dated aspect of it. But Jessica clearly doesn't give a shit about that particular clock, since she smashes it to bits. The clock budget on this show must be enormous if this is a daily occurrence.

Don’t get me wrong, it would have been sweet to see some actual characters and a montage of people being badass and superheroic in this teaser (shared on Facebook, but this first look at Jessica Jones gives us a sense of the tone and the setting. We already knew it would take place in Hell’s Kitchen, as it’s in the same universe as Daredevil. And it looks like Ms. Jones is leading the kind of life that has her staying out super-duper late and getting super-duper drunk. Whether she’s doing this for shits and giggles or actually trying to get work done while imbibing, that’s totally up in the air right now. All we know is, her day starts at 3 p.m. and not a second before that.

Starring Krysten Ritter, Jessica Jones is a noirish psychological thriller that centers on the troubled former superhero as she opens up a detective agency focused on cases involving superpowered people in New York. Her life is in shambles due to a dark past involving David Tennant's character Kilgrave, and the two will cross paths again. Viewers can also expect to see the introduction of Luke Cage, who will go on to get his own Netflix series next year.

Get pumped, people, because Jessica Jones will premiere on Netflix in its 13-episode entirety on Friday, November 20.
