TV Recap: American Idol - Final 9 ResultsAuthor: Kelly West

As we watch the contestants impersonate each other on the Idol stage, it was almost easy to forget that tonight one of the final nine contestants would be sent home. Looking at last night’s performances, I have to say, I was a little bored with some of the song choices. Lil Rounds: Celine Dion? Really? And some of the songs were just totally random and out of place. Megan’s Bob Marley song was just weird and Anoop: Usher? Come on. In addition to having a great voice, Usher is an extraordinary entertainer who has made a name for himself not only from his music but his ability to work the stage. I think Anoop’s adorable but his performance this week was as underwhelming as his Michael Jackson week performance. Stick to ballads, buddy. You have the voice but not the moves.
Last night wasn’t all bad. Once again, Adam Lambert proved he has the voice to do just about anything. And Danny Gokey and Kris Allen also carried themselves well and chose songs that complimented their voices. Enough critiquing last night’s performances. Tonight we get to see who America liked least, watch last year’s winner David Cook perform and see Lady Gaga strut her stuff on stage. The group performance was Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.” That song rules but it’s been forever ruined for me after the Sopranos finale’s infamous cut to black. Still, the final nine performed it well and it gave the choreographers another excuse to plant Scott behind a piano. Ryan divides the final nine into three groups of three, forcing us to speculate over which contestants are safe and which are in the bottom three. Meanwhile, David Cook performs a growly rendition of “Come Back To Me.” Afterward, Ryan presents a humbled Cook with a plaque commemorating his debut album going platinum. Over a million copies sold in three months! America has voted and they like David Cook! Yeah, that’s not news. After the break, Ryan tells Kris that he’s safe. No shock there. America loves his “sexy face” I’m sure. Next, Ryan messes with Matt so convincingly by sadly telling him he’s “also going to have to take a seat” that Matt actually heads towards the bottom three area, only to have Ryan correct him. Happy April Fool’s Matt! You’re safe. Megan’s next. She says she loves Simon but doesn’t care about his criticism. When Ryan tells her she’s in the bottom three she does a weird bird imitation as she walks towards the seats. Adam’s next and of course he’s safe. Next up is Danny, another crowd favorite. He’s also safe. Anoop and Scott are last up. One is safe, one’s in the bottom three. Randy says out of these two he thinks it’s Anoop in the bottom three because “Scott did his thing.” Ryan tells Scott he’s safe and Anoop takes the last seat in the bottom three. After the commercials, Lady Gaga takes the stage and starts singing a slowed-down version of “Poker Face.” It goes on for so long that I really thought she was going to spend the entire performance sitting at the piano but finally the music picks up and Gaga heads to center stage to stomp around and belt out the song properly. I can’t say her voice sounded great but she was like a crazy person on stage (in a good but scary way.) Loved the creepy violin too. It reminded me of Moulin Rouge for some reason. Before we get more commercials, Ryan asks Simon if there’s anyone in the bottom three worth saving. Simon says “one” and someone in the crowd yells out “Allison!” Yeah, I don’t think anyone can argue with that, though if it was between Anoop and Megan, I’d definitely want Megan to go. Anoop’s had a few good performances, which is more than can be said for Megan since the final-13 portion of the competition started. Ryan tells Megan she got the least amount of votes. Simon basically tells her that just as she doesn’t care what he thinks, they don’t care how well she sings tonight because they’re not saving her. Ouch. Megan performs “Turn Your Lights Down Low” again and her voice is just as wobbly as her dance moves. Afterward, she tells America she loves them. Farewell, Megan Joy (Corkrey). So what happened with Megan? Personally, I wasn’t a fan of her voice but I thought she had a cool look. I think she was either getting too much advice or not enough from whoever it was that was responsible for helping her manage her style and song-choice. She never seemed to pick the right song and with the exception of last night, always seemed too dressed up. Nothing against being dressed up but when you have a giant tattoo on your arm, wearing a prom dress only makes the ink look gaudy instead of cool.
