There’s some top talent headed to FX. Updates on the cable channel include word that a pilot order has been given for a comedy that is created by and will star funny-man Zach Galifianakis. Louis C.K. is co-writing. In other pilot news, Arrested Development’s Michael Cera is joining Deadwood’s John Hawkes in a comedy pilot called How and Why, which comes from screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, who gave us Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich.

So much talent!

We’ll start with the Galifianakis comedy. Details on the nature of the comedy are vague but it’s likely that fans of Galifianakis and/or Louis C.K. are already on board, assuming this project makes it to series. Vulture posted news of the pilot order, saying that it’s among a dozen comedy pilots in contention for a spot at either FX or FXX, the latter being FX’s recently launched comedy-skewed offshoot. Considering FX hasn’t moved all of their comedies to FXX — Archer, Chozen and Louie are all still at FX — it’s hard to predict where Galifianakis’ comedy will land if it manages to earn a series order.

While Galifianakis has made a big name for himself in film, particularly in his starring role in the Hangover movies, he’s no stranger to the small screen, having starred in HBO’s Bored to Death and appeared in a number of other shows. He also stars in his own series of Funny or Die videos Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis, during which he interviews celebrities.

“Michael

And then there’s the other pilot. EW says How and Why is “the story of a man who can explain how and why a nuclear reactor works, but is clueless about life.” And it comes from Academy Award-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. That alone piques our interest, especially when considering how unique and oddly charming Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich were. The premise for How and Why sounds like it has the potential to be equally unique and charming, especially when we factor in the involvement of Michael Cera, who joins John Hawkes in the pilot. No specifics on who’s playing what role were mentioned, but their involvement adds a bit more familiarity to this project.

Cera’s appeared in a number of memorable films, This is the End, Superbad and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World among them. But many of us associate him best for his role as the timid George Michael Bluth in Arrested Development. Cera reprised the role recently for the fourth season of the beloved comedy, which released on Netflix just last year. He’s also recurred in the voice-role of Sal Viscuso on Childrens Hospital, so his feature work hasn’t fully drawn him away from the small screen. Still, it would be great to see him back on TV in a starring role, so let’s hope things work out for How and Why.
