MGM Goes Double Feature For Mannequin Movies

MGM is releasing its cult classic Mannequin and less-classic Mannequin 2: On the Move as a double feature release, placing both movies in one package. It’s probably the only way people would willingly buy the second movie in the series, despite starring the loveable Kristy Swanson as the title Mannequin.

For those unfamiliar with the movies, Mannequin is a perfect specimen of ‘80s filmmaking. The movie stars Andrew McCarthy as a department store clerk who falls in love with a perfect mannequin (Kim Cattrall), which just happens to house the spirit of an ancient Egyptian princess who can come to life. Of course, her time alive is conditional, leading to situations where it looks like McCarthy’s character has an unusual mannequin fetish.

The sequel was loosely based on the original film and starred William Ragsdale who falls for a mannequin possessed by a 17th century princess (Swanson). Her similar ability to come to life is tied to a necklace that keeps her frozen.

The only link between the two movies, other than the similar plot device, is Meshach Taylor, who played the questionably-sexually-oriented Hollywood Montrose. The character was a nice quirky addition for the original, but not strong enough to survive to the sequel, despite his prominent placement on movie posters and advertising. So, strangely, guess which character is absent from the “double feature” packaging released by MGM?

The double feature release of Mannequin and Mannequin 2: On the Move hits stores on April 15th.
