X-Files Comes To Collectors

After reaching great success with their “Buffy” set (and the upcoming “Angel” set), Fox Home Entertainment is following suite with another complete collection of one of their most popular sci-fi series: “The X-Files.” While seasons have been available individually for a while now, on November 6th fans will be able to pick up “The X-Files” – The Complete Collector’s Edition which features all 198 episodes (9 seasons) of the television show as well as The X-Files: Fight The Future movie and a bonus disc filled with all sorts of new goodies.

Personally, I still haven’t figured out the big draw to these sets. The SRP for this collector’s edition is $329.00. I guarantee fans already spent more than that picking up 9 seasons of the show and the movie individually. Is one bonus disc worth of information really worth shelling out that cash for this kind of set a second time? Obviously it is, since “Buffy” sold really well despite a complete series already out in individual seasons. It didn’t even have a theatrical movie to work with like this one does, although nothing about the episodes or movie has anything new. Just the bonus disc and some collector’s items: a poster, art cards, a comic book, etc.

Maybe it’s just because I’m not a fan of “The X-Files,” which is probably a greater shame since part of my problem was coming to the show too late to really get into the mythos. DVD would be an excellent platform for me to take in the show I bet. Too bad this is being catered to the collectors. Wouldn’t Fox do better trying to get someone who hadn’t seen the show but might be interested to pick up everything in one fell swoop, hitting on the show’s dynamic storyline instead of the rabid fan who already has most of this stuff anyway?
