Microsoft recently unveiled the new line-up of games that will be available for free through the Games With Gold program for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 in October. With just days to go before the month is out, gamers can check out what titles they can expand their library with.
Over on the official Xbox news site, four of the games were revealed on the site. This includes Mega Baseball, The Escapists, MX vs ATV Reflex and I Am Alive. Obviously the offerings are far less impressive than the last two months. Microsoft really hammered home some high-quality games back throughout the summer as a way to lure in gamers and get them interested in both Xbox Live and the Xbox hardware... and it worked!
For July and August Microsoft managed to beat Sony in the Xbox One sales, edging out their competitor in due part to the software line-up and the introduction of the new Xbox One S for $299.99. A nice one-two combo to lure in the fence-sitters.
October isn't quite as jam packed with home-run titles. Yeah there's Mega Baseball but I haven't actually heard of that game before today. You'll be able to pick up a free digital copy of the title between October 1st and October 31st on the Xbox One. The game is a lighthearted, 3D baseball with realistic physics and up to four-player local cooperative play. The game regularly sold for $19.99, but you'll get it free at the start of October.
The second free Xbox One title for Xbox Live Gold subscribers is The Escapists. Now this may not seem like that big of a title, and while it, too, is also available for only $19.99... the game has been very popular with the gaming audience. The game centers around planning an escape from prison while trying not to tip off or alert the guards to your escape. It's a brilliant little RPG from Team17 that actually managed to become a sleeper hit. The Escapists will be available between October 16th and November 15th for the Xbox One.
From there, the next two titles are for the Xbox 360 but they can be played as backwards compatible games on the Xbox One. MX vs ATV Reflex will be available from October 1st through October 15th, featuring break-neck speed racing and high-octane thrills, while I Am Alive will be available between October 16th and October 31st.
The interesting thing about I Am Alive is that the game did not receive very good user reviews. The game came out during a time when Ubisoft was attempting to compete in some minor way with Naughty Dog's The Last of Us. Quite naturally comparisons were made between the two games and most people recognized that Ubisoft's game just did not live up to the standards of Naughty Dog's game. It's weird that the ratings on the store page are as high as they are, but the actual user reviews on other sites break down why the game isn't worth the price. I suppose it's good that gamers are getting it for free because you won't have to worry about a price of entry.
