In the Mass Effect games, N7 refers to the highest class of soldier in the Alliance military. As such, Bioware has made November 7th, the calendar equivalent of N7 a sort of Mass Effect holiday. This year, they're promising us more news on the next game in the franchise will come on that date. A new teaser is asking people to join the Andromeda Initiative, and says that training will begin on November 7.
The teaser trailer for the Andromeda Initiative shows us a moon based view of the planet Earth, along with the Ark ship, which appears to be a close cousin of the Citadel. This is the ship that will take your character, whichever of the Ryder siblings you choose to play as, to the Andromeda galaxy. While the trailer doesn't really explain why humanity needs to start expanding past our galaxy, it is clear that this mission will be a dangerous one and so they need to recruit the best candidates into the program. The pitch is pretty convincing, though that may just be because Clancy Brown's voice can do that.
We know that Mass Effect: Andromeda will take place 600 years after the events of the original Mass Effect trilogy, because that's how long it will take the spacecraft to travel from Earth's galaxy to the Andromeda galaxy. Once there, we'll meet all sorts of new alien life forms as humanity attempts to create a new home.
Exactly what we'll be learning beginning November 7th is difficult to say, however. The web link in the tweet just takes you to a page to sign up for a Mass Effect: Andromeda newsletter to get lost in the spam filter of your email account. With the game expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2017, it's probably time to start releasing some real details about the game. What is the real plot line of the story? What sort of combat will we be dealing with? In what ways will the new game tie into the original trilogy, and how will it not? These are all questions that remain unanswered at this point. We're not looking for spoilers, but at this point, we don't even know enough to be sure we're going to want to play this game.
N7 day is as good a day as any to release some real details. We're guessing Monday will bring a full trailer for Mass Effect: Andromeda likely one that includes some story elements as well as gameplay, or possibly more than one trailer, depending on how much they want to highlight different elements of the game. From there we don't honestly expect the email newsletter to break a great deal of news, though it will probably be a great resource for collecting it all in one place.
There's also the possibility that N7 day will bring us non-Andromeda related news. Remastered versions of the Mass Effect trilogy? They haven't been confirmed, but they have been rumored for some time and this fall would be a great time to release them.
How will you be celebrating N7 day? Let us know in the comments.
