The January, 2017 Games With Gold have been revealed for Xbox Live subscribers. The new set of offerings feature four different games you'll be able to add to your Xbox library for free. The four games are an eclectic mix of genres that appeal to a wide variety of gamers.
The video was posted up over on the official Xbox channel, featuring a quick look at Deathrap: World of Van Helsing, Killer Instinct: Season 2 Ultra Edition, Rayman Origins and The Cave.
• Deathtrap: World of Van Helsing will be free for Xbox One gamers starting on January 1st, 2017 up until January 31st, 2017.
• Killer Instinct: Season 2 Ultra Edition will be free for Xbox One gamers starting January 16th, 2017 and it will be available up until February 15th, 2017.
• The Cave will be available on Xbox 360 or for Xbox One through backwards compatibility between January 1st and January 15th in 2017.
• Rayman Origins will be free for Xbox 360 or for Xbox One through backwards compatibility between January 16th and January 31st in 2017.
The game line-up isn't quite as explosive as some of the previous months, but Microsoft had been consistently rolling out a lot of big AAA titles intermixed with their indie game offerings as well, which gave gamers on Xbox 360 and Xbox One a diverse cache of gaming experiences.
January's line-up is a safer play from Microsoft, featuring the side-scrolling antics of Ubisoft's platformer Rayman Origins, as well as the isometric tower-defense gameplay offered up from the lesser known Deathtrap. Both games deviate from the typical action-shooter motif that the Xbox is known for, so if you've grown tired of the Far Cry and Rainbow Six style games filling up the queue, you now have something completely different to experience.
And, speaking of completely different, The Cave from Double Fine Productions is yet another side-scrolling adventure game that came out a few years ago, putting players in a position of having to use wits, timing and puzzle-solving skills to overcome the challenges presented in the title. It's yet another game that steps away from the action-oriented fanfare that was made available throughout the rest of the year.
Last, but not least, is Killer Instinct Season 2. Now, the cool thing about this is that if Microsoft keeps the seasons coming for Killer Instinct, they'll be able to continually hand out free iterations of the game each year. The second season introduced a few more characters to the fold, including classic characters such as TJ Combo, Maya and Riptor, to name a few. The story was further expanded in the second season, and even set things up for what would transpire in the third season. With different developers stepping in to take over development of Killer Instinct and continue to grow and expand the universe, it's one of the few eighth gen launch games that still manages to stay relevant to this day. And, in January you'll be able to get the second season for free!
