Agents of Mayhem is set to storm onto the games landscape this fall and, for fans of Volition's other major series, Saints Row, you'll be treated to a familiar face. But only if you pre-order the game, of course. Gat is back, baby.
Launching Aug. 15 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, Agents of Mayhem is a super-powered shooter that gives players a chance to unleash superheroic powers on your enemies while making snarky quips along the way. It's 100 percent a Volition game, though, so expect plenty of over-the-top antics, a kooky sense of humor and a love for colorful environments and effects.
But since Agents takes place in the same universe as Saints, it makes sense that there would be at least a little crossover between the two games. Sure, Agents is set in a futuristic version of Seoul, South Korea, but it looks like Johnny Gat is willing to do some traveling if it means he gets to kick a little ass when he gets there.
As was revealed this week in a new trailer, Gat will be joining the cast of Agents of Mayhem as a playable character, but only if you pre-order the game. We imagine he'll be available for purchase for all comers at some point in the future, but that hasn't been confirmed yet. It's just common practice with pretty much every pre-order bonus character ever.
What's interesting about Agents of Mayhem is that it isn't built like most third-person shooters. The starting roster is 12 strong (not including Gat, we presume) and each has their own play style, weapons, and abilities. The trick is to figure out which characters and abilities work well together, as you're able to freely swap between a selected trio of characters on the fly. One character might be able to shock enemies, for instance, while another character's shotgun does bonus damage to enemies that have been shocked. A lot of the fun will come out of mixing and matching characters and figuring out which loadouts work best for a given level. We are, of course, happy to see Gat getting thrown into the mix now.
If we had to compare Agents of Mayhem to another game, it would actually be a MOBA or MOBA-esque title, like League of Legends or Overwatch. The difference, of course, is that you're playing solo. But the types of character loadouts is very similar to those types of games, so we think it's kind of neat to see them pop up in a very different setting.
As for the gameplay itself, Saints Row fans should feel right at home here. Sure, you've got some different options available and a few tweaks that fit the straight third-person shooting genre a bit better, but you're still running around a ridiculous world, blasting equally ridiculous baddies with similarly ridiculous abilities.
