Most major publishers are all attending E3 this year. It's a huge event that creates lots of lasting hype for some games for years to come. However, one of the major publishers, specifically THQ Nordic, has decided to opt out of visiting Los Angeles this year to attend E3 and the reason is quite hilarious.

In a press release the company announced that due to the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament, it will be skipping E3 this year. Yes, FIFA World Cup takes precedence over E3 for the folks at THQ Nordic. In the press statement, THQ Nordic mentioned...

It is with great regret that we at THQ Nordic must report that we will be unable to miss a single moment of this great sporting event. Therefore, we will be forced to stay in our lovely Viennese beer gardens, blowing the froth off a couple, watching football and one or two cool press conferences on Twitch (looking at you, Devolver) instead of rocking it ourselves.

In all seriousness, though, THQ may have decided to skip out on E3 in order to focus on preparing to showcase games at PAX West in Seattle, Washington, along with prepping for a booth at GamesCom in Cologne, Germany later this year.

The publisher has plans on demonstrating games like Darksiders 3, Biomutant, Fade to Silence, and _Wreckfest. _

The likelihood of some of these games being demonstrated at E3 probably fell just short of the window necessary to make the cut at E3. Preparation for demonstrations usually starts months before E3, or in some cases it starts a year beforehand when developers have time to put together a proper video showcase or playable vertical slice of a game.

In the case of the four major titles that THQ Nordic is publishing soon, it would probably make sense to focus on getting them finished right proper before release instead of parading them around at an event at E3.

It's important to keep in mind that showcasing unfinished games in ways that don't actually raise interest can hurt your product more than help it. In the case of THQ, the company probably thought it would better serve its games showing them off at GamesCom and PAX when they're closer to being completed than at E3.

So far, we haven't actually heard much about Darksiders 3 since its announcement, and Fade to Silence is still heavy in development through Early Access. We've also seen a couple of demonstrations of Biomutant, but I imagine there won't be much else to show until closer towards its release. Much of the same can also be said for Wreckfest, which has been crowdfunded through most of its development and moving through the Early Access phase as well.

That's also not to mention that for the games with 2019 release windows, it wouldn't make much sense paying top dollar to open a booth at E3 only to showcase more of what gamers have already seen since last year. Then again, according to the Steam listings, most of THQ's high-profile titles are due out later in 2018, so maybe FIFA really was the reason the company decided to skip E3.
