While Assassin's Creed III will take place in Boston, New York, as well as the wilderness, it was the latter that provided a challenge which the developers yearned. It is with that drive to create a completely new setting for Assassin's Creed that will ultimately culminate in a fresh experience with the series' third main installment.

"Our goal was to make a brand new Assassin’s Creed, and to make something that was completely fresh for the players. Something new to explore but at the same time have that sense that it was Assassin’s Creed. We’ve stuck to our pillars which are social stealth, navigation and combat, those are the three things that define the brand and then we wanted to evolve those," said lead writer Matt Turner to OPM.

"We’ve done the city; we’re good at that, we’ve proved we can make cities interesting to explore and a fun playground. We wanted to not only do that again but to take it outside of that with something new, and for us that was organic environments."

There’s a noticeable difference between building cities and creating aspects such as forests within the wilderness. The challenge to create the latter, however, is one that is relished by Ubisoft Montreal.

"There are challenges with that. But nothing good isn’t challenging. We got in there and started building the frontier from the very very start to try make something that was beautiful and evoked that fantasy but also with a completely 3D playable space that had the same kind of draw for a player in a playground as the city did."

"In solving that blocker, it allowed us to expand the cities. The trees were used as bridges, that isn’t only because of wide avenues but it gives us another elements in the cities that expand them even more," continued Turner. "Whereas there would have been a gap that you could not cross because there was a huge square; we can have two or three trees and be able to go right through it."

Trees within Assassin's Creed III is another aspect that made the game's new setting more believable. "All the stuff we were able to do in the frontier translated into the cities and made our cities that much more rich and dense. That design accomplishment permeated throughout the entire game and allowed us to do things that we just couldn’t do before."

Assassin's Creed III is currently scheduled for a release in North America on October 30th and a day later in Europe. A Wii U and PC release date have yet to be revealed.
