Way back in 1987, a little game called The Great Giana Sisters hit home consoles, cribbing from The Super Mario Bros. and, depending on who you ask, even improving on the Nintendo classic’s platforming formula. Today, a whopping 25 years later, the series returns as the second title to release under Steam Greenlight, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams.
Solely going off the following trailer, Twisted Dreams looks like a pretty dang impressive feat for an indie game project. No wonder it had such a successful Kickstarter campaign and, more recently, Steam Greenlight campaign.
As Giana, the player can move “with speed and grace, twirling past hazards and adversaries with a light touch and gentle heart,” according to a statement from developer Black Forest Games. However, with the press of a button, you can turn Giana into her punk rock alter ego, “full of raw attitude and a powerful dash to crush obstacles that block her way.” Put them together, and you’ve got yourself one multi-talented character perfect for exploring a world full of creeping monsters and tricky puzzles.
Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is now available on Steam, GOG and GamersGate. The regular price will be $14.99 but, from now until Oct. 30, you can pick it up for a discounted $13.49. Console gamers shouldn’t feel left out, though, as a PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade port are planned for some time in “early 2013.”
