Well who would have thought that The Game Awards would be playing host to the next big DLC reveal for Mortal Kombat X? Ed Boon and the rest of NetherRealm Studios have been hard at work on some of the next DLC packs for the game and they will be revealed this Thursday.
In a tweet sent out to notify people about when the next set of characters would be revealed, Ed Boon stated the following.
Mortal Kombat X has been dormant from the media promotion sphere for quite some time. After the game received its fourth DLC character NetherRealm took a backseat in the gaming media circles for a while, enjoying a good run in the FGC tournament scene.
However, back in September of this year NetherRealm announced that four more fighters would be joining the roster of Mortal Kombat X, presumably as part of the second season of downloadable content for the game.
They didn't reveal who the fighters were and they did so after the final character in the first pack, Tremor, had already made his way to home consoles and PC.
It's interesting because the four characters that made it into Mortal Kombat X were all really well done. Tanya, The Predator, Jason and Tremor brought a lot of different elements to the gameplay, including some tournament appearances by Tanya during both EVO and the ESL tournament that led up to EVO. Sadly the Predator and Jason weren't featured in the top eight but they were still cool characters added to the mix nonetheless.
The wide branch of sci-fi and horror characters making the cut after NetherRealm previously included Freddy Krueger left a lot of gamers completely perplexed as to who the next four characters will be in the upcoming DLC release. It would be really awesome if it were Ash Williams, Michael Meyers or even Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Basically no one knows which direction they're going in with the new characters and who they might be. It could very well be older characters from previous Mortal Kombat titles or brand new characters. It seems unlikely that they would create a brand new character just to implement them as DLC. That almost seems anti-climatic.
Some people believe that one of the four new characters being revealed will be Fujin, since he was briefly featured in the game's main story mode.
Of course, Ed Boon hasn't revealed who the character might be but he did link to an article about Superman looking like a villain in the new Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice clip. Given that NetherRealm did make a DC fighting game previous to Mortal Kombat X, it's entirely possible that one of the four characters being revealed is Superman, in preparation for the upcoming movie release this spring. While I would have preferred Spawn, it's likely that it's going to be Superman over the undead anti-hero. I guess we'll find out who the new Mortal Kombat X DLC character is at The Game Awards.
