NetherRealm Studios confirmed another character for Mortal Kombat X's roster tonight at EVO 2014. Long-time series veteran Raiden was revealed with a new gameplay trailer.
The trailer shows a full match between Raiden and Kotal Kahn. Kotal is one of several characters making their debut in MKX. He looks like a cross between a demon and an Aztec warrior. In the match he demonstrates a few fire magic abilities.
Raiden counters it in the traditional fashion: with way too much lightning. He can chain electric attacks together with physical blows to perform devastating combos. His teleport ability and ranged attacks ensure that his opponent's never out of striking distance.
He can, however, create some distance between his opponent and himself if need be. His Lightning Trap creates a ball of electricity that stays in place, zapping his opponent if he gets too close. Raiden uses two of these Traps at once - one above him, one to his right - to prevent Kotal from reaching him on the ground or through the air.
Mortal Kombat X will let players use the environment to their advantage. We don't see too much of that in this video. This level takes place on a dirt path outside a city so there aren't many objects for the combatants to throw or get thrown into. Raiden does use Kotal's face to open a barrel, though.
The two combatants trade X-ray combos near the end of the fight. Raiden starts by round-housing Kotal and dislocating his jaw. He then zaps Kotal in the back, teleports in front of him, and slugs him in the liver.
Kotal's retaliation is even uglier. He jabs his sword through Thunder God's throat and then grabs the weapon on both ends, cracking his spine. That seems like enough to kill anyone but Kotal finishes the job by kneeing Raiden in the face.
As grisly as Mortal Kombat X's X-Ray combos are, the fatalities are worse. Raiden somehow recovers from his earlier thrashing and decides to finish off Kotal for good. He grabs Kotal by his ears and begins pumping electricity into his skull. The current is so powerful that it makes Kotal's eyes pop out. Shortly afterward, his head pops off his neck like a cork from a champagne bottle. In keeping with Mortal Kombat's tradition of overkill, Raiden then zaps the flying head, smashing it into bloody chunks.
Mortal Kombat X is due in 2015 on PC, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4 and Xbox One.
