PS4 Sells 4.2 Million, Smashes The Competition To Pieces

Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 ended 2013 big. Microsoft was quick to exclaim that they sold more than three million SKUs before 2013 ended, and most people wondered where Sony fit into the spectrum. Well, all those reports about stock shortages were correlated to the sales cause. The PlayStation 4 has sold a massive 4.2 million SKUs as of December 28th, 2013.

CVG is reporting that Sony's Playstation president Andrew House announced the figures yesterday evening during the CES 2014 keynote speech, where it was revealed that the PS4 now has an install base of over four million.

I tried watching it for myself but there were so many people clamoring in to see what Sony had to say the stream was just absolute trash and kept cutting out. Nevertheless, Kaz's mission statement was not lost on the tech-culture community at all. Everyone is embracing the fact that the PS4 is an absolute powerhouse when it comes to sales.

According to House...

"The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn't be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network."After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014."

They also revealed that PlayStation Plus subscriptions increased by 90% after the release of the PlayStation 4, mostly due to the fact that you can't play online multiplayer games without a PlayStation Plus subscription; a method taken out of the playbook of Microsoft.

Of course, we can safely say that when analysts, bloggers, fanboys, console warriors and armchair mercenaries were repeating figures that showed that the PS4 was outselling the Xbox One at an uneven pace, the figures weren't lying. The data showed that the PS4 was outselling the Xbox One greatly in the UK and that retailers and e-tailers were having a hard time keeping the PS4 in stock.

Rumors were originally swirling that Sony wasn't producing enough units to give the media impression that the PlayStation 4 was selling more than it really was. However, it wasn't supply fixing by Sony, it was high demand from gamers.

As mentioned in our previous article about the Wii U beating the Xbox One in weekly sales, the numbers definitely seem to be showing that there will be a showdown between Nintendo and Sony, even though analysts believe that Nintendo doesn't stand a chance.

I'm definitely interested to see how these two big Japanese electronics giants battle it out and whether Nintendo can keep control of their home territory or if they'll lose out once the PS4 launches in Japan come February 22nd. The console is war on, folks. Those flameproof jockstraps and girdles are selling out like hot cakes. Be sure to get youself a pair before heading to the explosive comment section.
