Epic Games is putting Unreal Tournament off to the side. According to Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, they don't plan on producing another installment in the multiplayer shooter series anytime soon.
"Unreal Tournament is certainly a major long-term priority but we're planning not to release a major retail game in the series for several years," said Sweeney in a G4TV interview. "So we have that effort somewhat on hold while we work on a few other initiatives."
Though a sequel might be a long ways off, Sweeney points out that the lifespan of UT3 is being greatly expanded by user-generated content. "The really interesting thing about Unreal Tournament is that once we’ve defined the game in this generation the community takes it and runs with it. So you’ve seen the community create this massive set of maps and mods that go far beyond anything we could ever do. We almost solve the Unreal Tournament 4 and 5 problem ourselves by just making this toolset available because the community has done more than we could have ever hoped to do internally.”
Epic has provided a great deal of post-release support themselves. Earlier this year, the PC and PS3 versions of UT3 received a huge free update called "The Titan Pack" that brought new weapons, maps, vehicles, and game modes.
