Microsoft has announced the free Xbox One and Xbox 360 games that will be available for Xbox Live Gold members in October. As usual, Xbox One owners will get one freebie while Xbox 360 owners get two.

Starting on October 1st, Xbox 360 gamers can pick up Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Bad Company 2 features the class-based multiplayer that the series has become known for. Players can wage war on foot or in vehicles in maps with destructible environments. The accompany single-player campaign lets players continue the adventures of that bumbling squad from the first Bad Company.

DICE released some interesting DLC for that game after launch. It's not included with the free game but might be worth checking out. The Onslaught mode is a four-player co-op mode that pits players against an army of A.I. enemies. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam lets players fight on either side of the Vietnam War in multiplayer battles with new maps, weapons and vehicles.

Bad Company 2 will only be available for free download until October 15th. It will be replaced on the following day with another freebie: Darksiders 2. This hack-and-slasher lets players become Death, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Death must travel to Heaven, Hell and other realms to clear his brother's name. I personally wasn't a fan of all the puzzles or platforming segments but really enjoyed battling hordes of foes with Death's twin scythes.

The free Xbox One game, available throughout all October, isn't as high-profile as the 360 offerings. Chariot is a platformer that can be played solo or with a friend via local co-op. In the game, a Princess and her Fiance must move the deceased king's coffin on wheels through 25 levels filled with obstacles. In addition to figuring out the game's physics-based puzzles, players must also fight off the enemies that - for whatever reason - want your dad's corpse.

You've still got a few days left to get the September Games with Gold. Halo: Reach is currently available for free on Xbox 360. Xbox One owners can pick up Super Time Force or Crimson Dragon.

Microsoft's Major Nelson says that Chariot will be swapped in for Super Time Force rather than Crimson Dragon. I find that a little odd seeing as how Crimson has been available for free longer but hey, it's Microsoft's choice.
