When Yooka-Laylee was revealed on Kickstarter, people went nuts over the idea. It was a lovable platformer that played a lot like Banjo-Kazooie, a very beloved title from back in the day. And now the time is finally arriving for it to release, but if you backed in on Kickstarter, you’ll be playing it before anyone else.
Developer Playtonic Games announced that those who have backed Yooka-Laylee on Kickstarter will be able to get a playable demo come as soon as July. That means backers will get their hands on the game before anyone else.
But Playtonic Games warns that this isn’t a typical game demo. It’s called “The Toybox” and it’s going to be a sandbox-style demo where players are free to run around and get a taste of the game and its delightful platformer gameplay. And from what the developer says, it sounds like it’ll be a good chunk of separate playable content.
On Yooka and Laylee’s adventure, you’ll come across a villain by the name of Capital B who is trying to take all of the world’s literature. There will be a ton of collectibles to find, just like in any adored and successful platformer, and you’ll meet a cast of wildly interesting characters throughout the game. You can check out the trailer below.
I am honestly glad that it seems game developers are steering back towards a time when platformer games ruled. With beloved games like Spyro The Dragon and Crash Bandicoot, many gamers from that time ache for similar platformer games. And with releases like Lucky’s Tale and upcoming adventures like Yooka-Laylee, the hope for a return to those nostalgic games seems to be working. Hopefully we can keep that trend going.
Yooka-Laylee was funded by more than 80,000 fans a year ago on Kickstarter and Playtonic Games is dedicated to bringing a polished product to those backers. So while they’ve released some details about the game, they still haven’t announced an official release date. If you’d like to get more information on Yooka-Laylee, you can visit the official website.
