Behind-the-Scenes Look At 17 Again

When 17 Again comes out, it will probably be a gigantic hit, and further proof that Zac Efron is secretly the king of the world. Sure, he’s been laying low since Hairspray, but with this and High School Musical 3 coming out in theatres this year, it’s gonna be all-Efron, all the time. Don’t even go near the Disney Channel if you don’t want to be sucked in by those hypnotic blue eyes.

Watching the new behind-the-scenes video from the set of 17 Again though, it doesn’t appear that Efron is all that smart. That, or he’s never seen a single re-run of Friends. You see, in the movie he and Matthew Perry are playing the same character, a middle-aged man who is suddenly transformed into a 17-year-old, and given another chance to go to high school and make his teenage years great. And in the video we see Efron repeatedly calling Perry and asking him how he might read a certain line, so he could match up his mannerisms to Perry’s.

Yeah, being careful with your acting is all well and good, but I have to ask: “Could he be any more dense?” If Efron had ever seen a single episode of Friends, he would have Perry down pat. The sarcasm, the getting worked up over nothing, the vaguely gay characteristics that disappeared in later seasons when all the friends got indescribably boring. Not to say that Perry can’t act, but he definitely has a schtick, and even 10-year-olds can imitate it.

Most of the video is about Efron and Perry trying to act the same, though there’s a short interview with Leslie Mann and a lot of scenes of people playing basketball. Honestly though, this movie looks adorable, and I have a weakness for body-switching comedies (I will defend both Freaky Friday movies to the death). But if Efron had to work this hard to imitate Perry, that whole “King of the Future of Movies” thing might not be in the cards.
