DVD Blend - 06/28/05

Each week DVDs come out. Some of them are worth your time and money and some aren't. Some of them are movies I've seen, and some of them aren't. Regardless, I give you my opinion on the big releases of the week. If the releases sound like something you want to buy, just click the link to go to amazon.com and youíll support Cinema Blend with a few pennies. Take it or leave it, here's the DVD Blend.

Gunner Palace

This is an example of one of those movies that just didn't get wide enough exposure for my tastes, in fact, it never even played in my area, forcing me to wait for DVD in order to catch it. This documentary tells one of those stories the nightly news will never capture about the war in Iraq. "The Gunners" are a team of soldiers whose base of operations is the bombed-out palace of Uday Hussein. The documentary follows their highs and lows, from comedic tension breakers to the group literally under fire from snipers and road-side bombs. The DVD doesn't offer much in the way of extras, but if you're like me and you wanted to catch this film, DVD will be the way to do it. Check back here later this week for our review.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart - Indecision 2004

I know it seems we're taking a political angle on DVDs this week, but I don't control what comes out when, just what I like the looks of. In this case, Jon Stewart always makes me laugh with his humorous (and often honest) look at the news. Indecision 2004 highlights the events of the 2004 presidential election as told by "The Daily Show". Even though this seems to be a little late for a release, it's worth a look. Relive the humorous take on presidential debates, mistakes, and parodies spread over three discs (so this isn't just one of those NBC news highlight releases - there's actual content here). If releasing the segments aren't enough, the writers behind the pieces even offer their commentary on some of the bits and pieces.

Other titles released this week that might be worth your time:
Row 1 - Cell 0 The Pacifier - Vin Diesel proves his naysayers right with this Disney family film that isn't much of a film and really isn't family friendly. Based on the commentary track on the disc, the filmmakers may have been out to sabatoge their own film, and might have been better off offering two hours of Diesel having it out with a duck.Row 1 - Cell 2 Diary of a Mad Black Woman - Sorry to the three fans of this movie for relegating it to the lesser DVD releases this week, but there really is no appeal for me to watch this movie. I'm not black, or a woman, and whether I'm mad or not is up for debate. The title and plot stink of something that should be starring Martin Lawrence in drag.
