The final entry in Christopher Nolan's game-changing Batman trilogy made a major impression this year. The Dark Knight Rises raked in more than $1 billion worldwide, and divided audiences and critics with an ending that still has some cheering and other shaking their heads. Today, the film rolls out onto Blu-ray, boasting a bunch of behind-the-scenes featurettes that delve into the design of the Batmobile, the production art, the characters, and the brutal fight scene between Batman and Bane.

What with most of their faces being covered by costuming, it would seem like Christian Bale and Tom Hardy—playing Batman and Bane respectively—could easily tap out of the climactic and physically taxing fight choreography, allowing for stuntmen to do the scene's heavy lifting. However, the clip below—courtesy of Yahoo—not only reveals that these two incredible leading men did in fact fight for the film, but also unveils what a toll it took on them, and what a difference it made in the edit room.

It's gratifying to see action scenes discussed in terms of character. Physicality is a major element to shaping a performance, and for the actors to take on this scene speaks to how crucial it really is, not only as a plot point, but also as a crucial element of Bruce Wayne's character arc. It's clear from this vid editor Lee Smith, who has cut all of Nolan's Batman films as well as such action-heavy features as X-Men: First Class and Inception, is still vividly enthusiastic about the options Hardy and Bale's complete involvement in the scene offered. Then this clip is warmly topped off by a broadly smiling Hardy, talking about the pain and effort involved being worth it for the final look.

The Dark Knight Rises is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Download and On Demand. Read our review of the Blu-ray here.
