Efron Holding Out On High School Movie

You’re never too old to have high school drama, apparently. Even if you’re seven years removed from it, like some of us are. The rumors surrounding the third installment of Disney’s enormously popular High School Musical series prove that. And, let’s face it, who doesn’t love some drama? Admit it.

When High School Musical 2 debuted on August 17, it broke all kinds of ratings records. 17.2 million viewers tuned in to see the Wildcats’ summer vacation, which is the largest audience for a basic-cable telecast ever. You heard me. Ever. With the franchise so ridiculously popular, Disney plans to market the third movie for theatrical release. That’s right. You can see Troy (Zac Efron), Gabriella (Vanessa Anne Hudgens), and their classmates on the big screen. Be still my heart. World domination is next, I’m sure. Those songs are quite catchy.

However, there’s a hitch in the plan (the third movie, not world domination – no problems on that front). Efron and Hudgens reportedly want big bucks for the film. According to TV Guide, they’ve supposedly turned down the $1 million apiece that the studio has offered them to reprise the roles that made them famous. Does this mean the end of HSM as we know it? Only time will tell, though execs for Disney have stated that they already intended to introduce new characters in the third movie in order to keep the franchise going. And going. And going…
