The cast of John Wells in-development August: Osage County is pretty remarkable. Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Abigail Breslin, Chris Cooper, Juliette Lewis, Sam Shepard and the brilliant Benedict Cumberbatch make up the ensemble. Now they’re adding one more high-profile name, but will they finally begin filming?

The Weinstein Company announced that Ewan McGregor has joined the cast as Julia Roberts’ estranged husband, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Those who are familiar with Tracy Letts’ source play know that McGregor’s character, Bill Fordham, also happens to be Streep’s son-in-law. It’s a complicated part, as Fordham left his wife for one of his students – a college hottie – but still wants to be around to support his family.

Needless to say, Wells has assembled an all-star cast of heavy hitting talents. Oscar trackers joke that once August finally reaches the screen, it’s all but assured every top prize at the Academy Awards, sight unseen. But Wells still needs to actually deliver a film. At one point, it was believed that the adaptation of Letts’ Pulitzer- and Ton-winning play would try to be in theaters by 2012. Now it’s slated for 2013.

We know the cast will deliver. Now I’m paying attention to Wells. His 2010 directorial debut The Company Men coaxed some decent performances out of Ben Affleck and Tommy Lee Jones, but I don’t remember many specifics about the plot. He has stronger material to work with given Letts’ pedigree, but with McGregor’s addition and the already existing cast what are your thoughts on Osage County? Are you excited for it?
