Director Paul Feig's upcoming Ghostbusters reboot has already put together a pretty great ensemble of stars - including Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Chris Hemsworth - but today the roster has gotten even deeper. That's because new reports have revealed that the in-production blockbuster has added four more actors to the cast.
The Wrap has the scoop on these new additions, but let's break them down one-by-one, shall we?
Andy Garcia was a pretty busy guy in 2014, voicing a blue bird in Rio 2, teaming with Jeremy Renner on the drama Kill The Messenger, and looking for laughs in Let's Be Cops, and now his 2016 is looking a lot more interesting thanks to his role in Ghostbusters. While the precise details of his role are being kept a secret for now, apparently he will be playing the mayor of New York City in the movie. David Margulies performed this role in the 1984 original, but with Garcia's skills it's not hard to imagine him playing something akin to William Atherton's Walter Peck in the new film - a.k.a. a government official who doesn't love the Ghostbusters' antics.
The second new addition is the great Michael K. Williams, who we only know to be playing a character named Hawkins in Ghostbusters. Best known for his work in drama - especially for his role as Omar in the HBO series The Wire - he has landed a number of comedic roles. The most notable may be his run on the series Community, where he played a biology professor recently released from prison.
It was actually all the way back in February that we first started hearing rumors that Saturday Night Live star Cecily Strong was also going to be joining the Ghostbusters cast - but now it's actually been confirmed. Along with Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, that means there are now three active SNL stars appearing in the movie. Sadly we don't even have a name for her character in the new film, though it's interesting to also note that she very recently worked with Melissa McCarthy on the upcoming Michelle Darnell.
Finally, the fourth new member of the Ghostbusters cast is the great Upright Citizen Brigade alum Matt Walsh. Though all we know about his part in the movie is that he will be playing a guy named Rourke, the fact that he is involved with the project is a very good sign. He's consistently one of the funniest members of the cast of the HBO series Veep, and if he can shine in an ensemble that great, he should be able to work some magic in Paul Feig's film.
Ghostbusters is currently filming in Boston, though sadly at this time there really aren't any more details available about the movie. Hopefully we'll start to learn more about the plot in the next few months, but for now we'll just wait patiently for July 22, 2016.
