Congratulations, Paul Feig! Not only is your latest comedy, The Heat, rolling into theaters (and collecting favorable reviews from Web sites such as ours), but you also are one of the 276 people invited today to join The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
All of the names were posted on the Academy’s official site, breaking them into categories depending on their craft.
"These individuals are among the best filmmakers working in the industry today," said Academy President Hawk Koch. "Their talent and creativity have captured the imagination of audiences worldwide, and I am proud to welcome each of them to the Academy."
Let’s run through a few notable names in the different categories, starting with the Actors:
Are you ready for Chris Tucker and J-Lo to be Academy members? The Directors category is another interesting selection of invitees, including last year’s nominee, Benh Zeitlin, who helmed Beasts of the Southern Wild.
Here are this year’s invited directors:
Say this with me: Todd Phillips, Academy member.
At least several talented directors found their way into the Writers category, including Jeff Nichols, Sarah Polley, Lena Dunham and Rian Johnson. You can go over the complete list of 276 invited members here. Not everybody gets in, though. According to the release, Academy members are able to sponsor one candidate for membership within their branch. In the spring, new member applications are reviewed. New members then are welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception in September.
So celebrate Feig’s invitation to the Academy by supporting his comedy, The Heat, in theaters this weekend. Maybe he’ll invite you to the September reception as a thank you.
