The rivalry between Marvel and DC is arguably the strongest it’s ever been, primarily because both companies have their respective cinematic universes established. However, despite these two superhero franchises at work, that doesn’t mean fans can’t enjoy both, and it’s no different for actors involved with these movies. For instance, Captain America: Civil War star Sebastian Stan recently watched Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and liked what he saw.
In an interview with The Daily Beast, Stan complimented the second DC Extended Universe installment, citing the visuals, Ben Affleck’s Batman and Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor were among the highlights for him. He said:
I did see Batman v Superman, and I enjoyed it. I think visually it was insane. I thought Ben Affleck was an incredible Batman. I thought that fight sequence he had against all the guys, that was sick. Even Jesse Eisenberg was cracking me up at some points. That’s all I got.
Sebastian Stan added that he thinks DC’s at a point where they want to get the Justice League formed on the big screen, and the best way to do that was by pitting Batman and Superman against each other. He’s not wrong. Although Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman are arriving before Justice League: Part One, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice definitely laid the groundwork for the superhero team to be formed, which will happen in November 2017, followed by a sequel in 2019. Often times we’ll hear about how someone at one company made a dig at the competition, or vice versa, so to hear Stan compliment Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is refreshing from the usual Marvel/DC bickering.
Of course, when all is said and done, Sebastian Stan is still a "Marvel guy," so we can’t blame him for sticking to his guns at the House of Ideas. Stan made his MCU debut as Bucky Barnes in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, and he returned in 2014 as the brainwashed Winter Soldier in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. A good portion of Captain America: Civil War follows the hunt for Bucky, who is blamed for a terrorist attack. On the run, he eventually joins Team Captain America in the fight against the new superhero legislation, all while still overcoming the lingering control HYDRA left in his head. There’s no word yet on when Stan will reprise the role again, but if the ending of Captain America: Civil War is any indication (no spoilers here), it will probably be before Phase Three is finished.
You can currently see Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier on the big screen in Captain America: Civil War. As for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, that’s still playing in theaters, and is currently expected to be released on Blu-ray on July 15.
