Leonardo DiCaprio is a great actor. This is pretty much the least controversial statement one can make when talking about movies. However, as great as he is, he has yet to win the top award given to great actors. 2016 may be his year, however, as he’s nominated for the Best Performance By An Actor in a Leading Role Oscar for the fourth time, thanks to his performance in The Revenant. What are his chances of winning the award this time? Pretty good according to one of his former co-stars. Kate Winslet thinks Leo’s going to take the Oscar home this time.
Kate Winslet, who is, herself, nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Steve Jobs thinks that the long-suffering actor will finally get to stand on the Oscar stage this time with the award in his hand. She told BBC News that this " probably" would be the year the Jack to her Rose took home the elusive prize, adding:
I think you can sort of feel it, and I think that everyone wants it for him... I think you can sort of feel the temperature. It's probably going to be Leo's year.
The entire topic puts Winslet in an interesting position as her Steve Jobs co-star Michael Fassbender has also been nominated, in a role that Leonardo DiCaprio himself was once attached to. She calls Fassbender’s performance "extraordinary," but it doesn’t look like that’s going to be enough to overcome the DiCaprio wave that Winslet thinks is washing over Hollywood.
The one thing that’s noticeable by its absence in Kate Winslet’s comments is any mention of Leonardo DiCaprio’s actual performance in The Revenant. While nobody is denying that DiCaprio’s work in the film is rock solid and that the actor has put together an amazing body of work, it’s less clear that this particular role is the one that should win DiCaprio the Oscar. However, many Academy voters may be feeling much the same way that Winslet is, that this is the year DiCaprio should win, regardless of anything other than the fact that Leonard DiCaprio deserves to have an Oscar. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that an actor was perceived to have won the award due to being overlooked previously.
Leonardo DiCaprio has previously received Best Actor Nominations for roles from Blood Diamond to The Wolf of Wall Street. The Revenant is his sixth overall nomination. The film did very well at the Golden Globes, bringing in several major awards as well as giving DiCaprio the Best Actor award there as well.
Do you agree with Kate Winslet that this is DiCaprio’s year? If you think he will when, do you also think heshould win, or is that a different conversation?
